{"id":735,"date":"2014-03-10T23:07:27","date_gmt":"2014-03-10T23:07:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oakfieldhull.co.uk\/?page_id=735"},"modified":"2025-10-03T11:04:23","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T11:04:23","slug":"student-voice","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.oakfieldhull.co.uk\/index.php\/student-voice\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Student Council<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>An effective student council structures, which involves the whole school, offer huge benefits to both the community and the individual &#8211; here are just a few:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pupil councils provide a basis for active learning of important life skills, such as speaking and listening skills, teamwork, emotional literacy, problem-solving, moral reasoning skills, self-esteem and self-confidence.<\/li>\n<li>Pupil council experiences provide a dynamic foundation for learning about citizenship.<\/li>\n<li>Young people and children acquire skills which help them to become resilient to negative experiences.<\/li>\n<li>School and class councils enable pupils to have a voice and to understand that their opinions count.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">What does an effective student council look like?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>All pupils have the opportunity to be involved in the Student Council:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>It is pupil-led<\/li>\n<li>It is part of the school\u2019s ethos and practice<\/li>\n<li>It deals with the core issues of the school<\/li>\n<li>It makes a difference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>What are the benefits of an effective Student Council?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Improved relationships between pupils<\/li>\n<li>Pupils have pride in themselves and their school<\/li>\n<li>Pleasant and equitable school ethos<\/li>\n<li>Improved physical environment<\/li>\n<li>Responsible behaviour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Please note to enable this to happen, there has to be full and active support from the Headteacher and the SLT.\u00a0 Integration of pupil participation into the decision-making structures of the school.\u00a0 This should include all aspects of school life including teaching and learning, not just the physical environment and organising events.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Our council progress so far:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>The school council is established and runs termly by Nick Riggs . One pupil from each class attends; minutes are forwarded to the SLT to be actioned.<\/li>\n<li>Pupils actively participate in interviewing prospective employees joining the school.<\/li>\n<li>School representatives attend international student council meetings at WISE.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>What is next for the Student Council:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>To develop the established work that has been undertaken to embed the student council, within the school and develop into the Residential Provision.<\/li>\n<li>To embed a student council within the residential setting.
